How to Use the Fuel Consumption Calculator
Enter your generator size, fuel type, and operating conditions to get an accurate fuel consumption estimate. The calculator uses non-linear partial-load curves based on aggregate manufacturer data from Clifford Power, Hardy Diesel, and Worldwide Power Products — not the simplified linear estimates you’ll find elsewhere.
Results include altitude and temperature derating per ISO 8528-1, engine age adjustments, and a cost projection at current fuel prices. For healthcare facilities, use the companion 96-Hour Fuel Rule Calculator to check CMS compliance.
Common Generator Fuel Consumption Rates
| Generator Size | 25% Load | 50% Load | 75% Load | 100% Load |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 kW | 0.6 GPH | 1.0 GPH | 1.6 GPH | 2.0 GPH |
| 50 kW | 1.2 GPH | 2.2 GPH | 3.3 GPH | 4.5 GPH |
| 100 kW | 2.5 GPH | 4.5 GPH | 6.5 GPH | 8.5 GPH |
| 250 kW | 5.5 GPH | 10.5 GPH | 15.5 GPH | 20.0 GPH |
| 500 kW | 10.5 GPH | 20.0 GPH | 29.5 GPH | 38.0 GPH |
| 1000 kW | 20.0 GPH | 38.0 GPH | 56.0 GPH | 72.0 GPH |
| 2000 kW | 39.0 GPH | 74.0 GPH | 110.0 GPH | 141.0 GPH |
Rates shown for diesel generators at sea level, 77°F, in new condition. Actual consumption varies with altitude, temperature, and engine age. Use the calculator above for precise estimates.
